Dice is a board game cafe – if you’re unfamiliar with the concept, it’s a cafe that offers not just food and drink, but a vast library of games to play. And the staff, like knowledgeable sommeliers, will be happy to recommend something playful that goes with whatever mood you’re in or company you’re with. They’ll also get you started with learning the rules.
Buying new board games can set you back a bit: £30 or even £50 per title. A few hours at Dice is a golden opportunity, not just for games nerds who have in mind what titles they want to try out, but also for games newbies who have no idea what they would like and benefit from guidance.
When you play a game with a group of friends, you get to know them in new ways – you discover who has a poker face, who is a master strategist, who can lie without smirking, who is best at being silly. And good games also help us get to know ourselves, as we try on roles that we might not inhabit in real life.
Playing games is a wonderfully useless way to pass an afternoon or evening – it’s not about achieving some specific aim, not even necessarily about winning (Dice has plenty of cooperative games in their library), rather, for me it’s about reconnecting with the playful side that each of us has, that tends to get drowned out as we pass into adulthood. And you can bring children too, of course.
