The Literacy Hubs, otherwise known as Pompey Pirates are a local charity inspiring the children of Portsmouth to fall in love with reading and writing. The children are enrolled on a year-long programme where each session the young pirates enjoy sharing books with volunteers in an imaginative learning environment.
Each term they work on an exciting published project. Over the course of the year, the children will become authors, scriptwriters, film stars and radio presenters.
For their first project, the children on the programme are writing short stories which will be published and compiled into a book in the new year. It will include over 50 stories showcasing the imagination and dedication from local Portsmouth children. This book will be sold in the local bookshop Pigeon Books in the new year.
The Literacy Hubs are currently looking for volunteers to join their crew. As a volunteer, you will read 1:1 with the children and work within small groups on writing tasks related to the project.
“I continue to volunteer at The Literacy Hubs because no two sessions are the same. I love that each group brings new challenges and excitement, and I am always blown away with how creative and hardworking the kids are. It’s a fun learning environment for me as much as it is for the children because I am constantly building on my skills and discovering new ways to approach a task.”
