1. Explore Southsea Beach

Pack a picnic, bring a bucket and spade, and enjoy a full day by the sea. Skim stones, collect shells, and dip your toes in the water – classic summer fun! With its newly extended promenade and fresh sea breeze, Southsea Beach is the perfect place for a family walk, there’s plenty to explore!

2. Canoe Lake

A lovely spot to feed the ducks, ride pedal swans, or enjoy a family picnic. There’s a playground for the kids and open space to run about – all just a short walk from the seafront. You’ll also find public toilets nearby, very convenient for younger children or those with weaker bladders.

3. Castle Fields

A great open space for ball games, kite flying, or a relaxing picnic. There’s often something going on here, from local events to street performers. Water fountains are nearby too – perfect for keeping cool in the summer months. And don’t forget the hill – ideal for tiring out the kids. How many times can they run up and down?

4. Southsea Rock Gardens

A peaceful green space with winding paths, perfect for a quiet walk or exploring nature with the kids. Look out for butterflies and bees! It’s also great for picnics and games of hide and seek, with easy access to the beach and natural shelter from both the wind and the sunshine. A real hidden gem in Southsea.

5. Visit the Butterfly House

Next to Canoe Lake, this small tropical space is located inside Southsea Museum and is home to butterflies and exotic plants. It’s free to enter the Butterfly House and makes a lovely stop during a summer walk. With plenty more to see inside the museum, it’s a great place for families to explore. There are also public toilets in the museum.

6. Discover Local Art

Southsea is packed with creative talent, and there’s no shortage of local art to discover. From independent galleries to colourful murals, it’s a great way to explore the area and support local artists. You can also check out our own book Pompey Poems, a children’s book that celebrates life in Portsmouth through poetry and art – it even includes a section for kids to create their own local legend!

7. Library Activities

Southsea Library often runs free workshops, storytime sessions, and craft activities during the holidays. Located at Palmerston Road, it’s easy to pop in while exploring the local shops. Whether you’re looking for something fun and creative to do with the kids or simply want to cool off and enjoy a quiet moment, it’s a welcoming spot worth visiting. Keep an eye on their schedule to see what’s on during your visit.

8. Jumpers for Goalposts

Bring a football and enjoy a kickabout with the kids on Southsea Common. Let them run free in the sea air, meet other children, and burn off some energy! It’s a simple way to spend quality time together, soak up some sunshine, and enjoy the wide open space.

9. Pier-Side Adventures

Arcades and nearby parks offer classic Southsea fun for families. Head to Clarence Pier for a wander through the arcades and enjoy the nearby park located behind the public toilets. Over by South Parade Pier, take a stroll and explore Canoe Lake park, where there’s plenty of space to play and watch the pedal swans glide by. A mix of seaside sights and outdoor fun, perfect for making new friends and memories, without spending a fortune.

10. Watch the Sunset

Head to the beach in the evening, enjoy the warm glow, and make memories with an ice cream or a bag of chips. It’s a calm and beautiful way to end a busy day. A great spot to watch the sunset (and let your dinner digest) is the hill near the Pyramids Centre – from here, you’ll get stunning views across Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight, and Gosport.
